30% of Maryland high school students reported feeling sad or hopeless according to the 2017 factsheet. Recreation and Parks professionals have the unique opportunity to assist youth with early intervention. The Youth Mental Health First Aid Course provides tools to assist a youth in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8 hour course that introduces participants like youth workers, recreation and parks staff, and child care workers to identify the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in youth, build understanding of the importance of early intervention and teach individuals how to respond to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. This course is led by a certified Mental Health First Aid USA instructor.
