A certificate program for park and recreation professionals

June 4 - 8:30 AM - 4 PM

June 5 - 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Cost Recovery. You’ve all heard the phrase. Some think it’s great and want to know more while others flee. And few take the leap to make the art and practice of cost recovery part of their agency’s financial strategy.  Even if your organization has already embarked on or completed a cost recovery plan, the ability to implement that plan and manage the change that may come with it is just as important as the plan itself.

What we do know with absolute certainty is the historic reliance on tax dollars to subsidize high percentages of parks and recreation services has become both unpredictable and risky. And with many systems continuing to do “business as usual,” rolling the dice when to comes to sustaining parks and recreation systems in both the short and long term is a bad bet.

Finally, a Master Class in Cost Recovery is available. One that addresses the critical elements of creating and implementing a cost recovery philosophy. And one that will help professionals rationalize how tax dollars are spent, how services are priced, and how to address impending political challenges that guide many to focus on special interests rather than the common good.

Learner outcomes gained through interactive workshops and discussion:

1.     Master Class participants will actively work through the steps necessary to understand, create and implement a financial sustainability model and philosophy

2.     Master Class participants will develop strategies to articulate and illustrate their real financial condition, make informed management decisions, and develop needed financial management policies for the organizations.

3.     Master Class participants will engage in discussion centered on the differences between community and individual benefit of park and recreation services.

4.     Master Class participants will design advocacy strategies to help educate and inform various stakeholder groups, including staff, user groups, and elected and appointed officials.

5.     Master Class participants will discuss ways to refine allocation of resources that are transparent, articulate and defensible.
