MRPA STAR SPANGLED SOCIAL
Saturday, September 13th
“And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night that our flag was still there!"
The Maryland Recreation and Parks Social Committee invites you to participate in the star-spangled bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812’s Battle of Baltimore, which inspired the penning of the famous words above, part of the American National Anthem. Baltimore will be abuzz with merriment and good cheer, and we hope you will join with your fellow MRPA members for a day of festivities that include some of the great special events being offered in the city.
Noon-1:15PM – Meet up at the home of Pat McDougall, 342 S Robinson St., Baltimore, MD 21224
Short walk south to Canton Waterfront Park.
2PM-4PM – Air show featuring the Blue Angels, taking place over the harbor. Canton Waterfront Park is one of the designated viewing spots. Numerous quality watering holes are also available nearby.
Short walk west along the waterfront promenade to Fells Point.
4:30PMish-6PMish – Enjoy the Fells Point “Red, White & Brew” event in Fells Point’s Broadway Square. Live music, food trucks, vendors, beer & wine, and a plethora of Fells Point pubs and shops. Visit the sailing vessels!
Walk east back to Pat’s place, through the magnificent Patterson Park and by the park’s famed pagoda on Hampstead Hill, where the land attack on Baltimore came to an inauspicious end.
Evening into the night – Party at Pat’s place (address above), including pizza and salads from local institution Matthew’s Pizza. Hang out inside, outside, on the roof deck. Wander back and forth from Patterson Park, a mere block away! Around 9:30PM the fireworks display promised to be “Baltimore’s largest fireworks since 1814” will take place. View it in the distance from the deck, or mosey back down to Canton Waterfront Park for a closer view.
If your wardrobe allows, please wear blue pants/shorts and a red shirt/blouse/top. This will perhaps help us to find each other quicker among the crowds. Some adult and general refreshments and munchies will be available at Pat’s place during the meet up and in the evening. What to bring with you: Sunscreen, a lawn chair or blanket, refreshment(s) of choice, small/personal cooler if you plan to carry refreshments with you. Also welcome would be a cornhole set or two, Frisbees, footballs, and anything else that you may want to play in the park. Some extra coolers with ice would also be welcome.
This is a free/pay-as-you-go event, but to gauge interest and plan for beverages and refreshments, please RSVP to Pat McDougall (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Matt Reno (email@example.com) by Thursday, September 11th. Pat will email participants his phone number for communications on the day of the social.
