Creating a Safe Environment in the Recreation and Parks Setting for Transgender and Gender Non-conforming Individuals (TGNC) - .15CEUs

This training is designed to raise the level of participant awareness and understanding of the needs of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals within our community. We will address legal rights and best practices for affirming transgender and gender non-conforming individuals that will allow MRPA to adapt policies and procedures to meet the needs of these individuals.  Issues such as confidentiality, gender appropriate participation, bathroom and locker room usage and gender markers will be discussed.

Presenters:

Sue Garner, PFLAG-Columbia-Howard County, MD Chapter

Sue Garner, Chair of the PFLAG Columbia-Howard County, MD chapter, was a school psychologist with the Howard County Public School System for 38 years. She remains involved in training school staffs and university graduate students on “Creating a Safe School Environment for LGBTQ Students.”  She also sponsored the Gay-Straight Alliance Club at Glenelg High School.  Sue’s work was instrumental in achieving the first-ever mandatory training for all school psychologists in the Howard County Public School system and getting a GLSEN Safe Space Kit into every student services office in the system.  Sue speaks and trains on the challenges facing our LGBT students and what the school system can do to support them.

M. Saida Agostini, MSW, LGSW, Director of Community Engagement and Youth Policy, FreeState Legal Project

Saida Agostini directs the outreach and training program at FreeState Legal Project to engage community members statewide. Through the work of the outreach program, Saida has facilitated trainings, lectures and workshops on the needs and resiliencies of LGBTQ youth.  These trainings include a webinar on working with LGBTQ youth in care, which is now mandated professional development for all foster care workers, and the launch of regional conferences for professionals working with youth.  As the coordinator of the Youth Equality Alliance (YEA), a statewide policy coalition advocating for the well-being LGBTQ youth, Saida supports the coalition in its work to build safe spaces for LGBTQ youth in foster care, education, and juvenile justice.  A clinician, youth worker, and experienced program director, Saida has developed and launched community, statewide and national programs, including the first ever youth emergency respite shelter in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and  a national minority internship program for the Environmental Protection Agency. Her work is guided by a commitment to building brave and transformative spaces for LGBTQ youth, people of color, survivors of violence and other communities to engage in healing and social change. She has worked with diverse populations for over a decade, spanning clinical work at the Mazzoni Center in Philadelphia to social justice youth driven programming in Boston.
